In the film
In the Mood for Love, protagonist Chow Mo-Wan shared about the practice of whispering secrets into a tree hole. This practice is believed to originate from a folktale, "The Emperor Has Donkey Ears". In our interpretation, whispering a secret into the wooden box will activate one of the fans on the ground. When another person shares their secret, the other fan is activated. The back-and-forth dance of the leaves visualises the release of secrets into the world.
