Triggered by darkness, a light will fall and rise within a netted structure, casting a tessellation of two-toned shadows in the space. matahari (‘sun’) is inspired by the way sunlight streams into the house through the windows, moving across the space as the day progresses. The shadows are said to resemble the grid-like structure of HDB flats, and the way the moving shadows engulf the space evokes a visceral response for some viewers.
First presented as part of a trio of work for Wayang Bayang, an independent exhibition held during Singapore Art Week 2022, in collaboration with Ngiam Li Yi.
In 2023, matahari was re-made for >input>output, a solo exhibition and mini open studio. It took on the form of a wall-mounted framed piece nested within a small room. When viewers unhooked the curtain to the room and let it fall, thus turning the room dark, matahari would be activated.

It was most recently re-made in 2024 for rehat, a solo exhibition at George Town Festival 2024 in Penang, Malaysia.
